Is an Alcohol Service Review required to serve alcohol at a University event?
Yes. All University‑hosted or sponsored events serving alcohol must submit an Alcohol Service Review request through the portal.

How far in advance must the Alcohol Service Review be submitted?
The Alcohol Service Review must be submitted at least 20 days before the event.

Who must follow the alcohol service requirements?
These requirements apply to all events held on University‑owned or leased property, as well as off‑campus events that are funded, directed, managed, or supervised by the University.

Can student groups or clubs host events with alcohol?
No. Student groups, clubs, and organizations are not permitted to host events where alcohol is served.

Who is allowed to serve alcohol at University events?
Only Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) trained and certified servers may serve alcohol.

What are the requirements if the department provides its own servers?
There must be at least two (2) Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) trained servers are required at the event to allow for breaks.
Departmental Servers must:
Be present at the event
Be in control of the service of alcohol at all times
Monitoring guests for possible intoxication
Be 21 years-old or older
Refrain from drinking alcohol during the event

Is food required when serving alcohol?
Yes. Food must be available, and it should be more substantial than light hors d’oeuvres.

Can attendees bring their own alcohol?
No. Bringing personal alcohol to an event is prohibited.

Do non alcoholic beverages need to be provided?
Yes. Non‑alcoholic options must always be available.

How must age verification be handled?
All attendees should show state or federally issued ID to verify age and then a clear, visible methods of identification should be used. These include:
- Wristbands
- Hand stamps
- Restricted access areas

Are there guidelines for reducing risk when serving alcohol?
Yes. Event planners should:
- Consider alcohol content when selecting beverages
- Avoid open bars
- Use reasonable serving sizes
- Limit drinks per person (e.g., drink tickets)
Close the bar one hour before the event ends

Do we need to provide transportation options for impaired guests?
Yes. Options such as rideshare services or designated driver programs should be arranged.

Can University funds be used to purchase alcohol?
Risk Management does not advised on funding or purchase of alcohol. You should reach out to your purchasing department for guidance.

Can a University‑sponsored event be held at a private residence?
It is strongly discouraged. The homeowner is personally liable for alcohol service and related incidents. If it does occur, hiring a trained caterer is highly recommended.

Can events with alcohol be open to the public?
No. Events with alcohol must be by invitation or ticket sale. They should not be open to the general public.

Do off campus departmental events automatically count as University sponsored?
No. Off‑campus events not paid for with University funds are not considered University‑sponsored.
